Derric's Biography

Derric was born in 1952 in Cape Town and spent his formative years there. He completed his education as a graphic artist while working in the commercial and manufacturing sector as a creative artist. During this period he began developing his career as a full time artist and in 1978 he held his first art exhibition in Cape Town. This was a huge success and his passion for art inspired him to start giving art classes while pursuing art as a career.

In 1986 Derric became a professional artist and in 1990 he moved with his family to Greyton in the Overberg, Western Cape. Derric and his family spent six years there and he feels that during this time, the Overberg had a great impact on his work. He calls it the South African version of the Provencal region of France and the incredible beauty of this area will always influence his work.

At the end of 1996, Derric and his family returned to Cape Town. His eyes were opened to new vistas he previously ignored. Colourful places like the Malay Quarter (Bo-Kaap) and the cityscapes have become part of his portfolio of subject matter.

Derric has become an extremely popular artist in South Africa, as well as internationally, and has become famous for his superb impressionistic paintings. He is especially known for his colourful land and seascapes, female figures and abstract wildlife.

Derric has exhibited often in Germany, England, Italy and Australia and many of his paintings hang in the homes of collectors from Singapore, Switzerland and Portugal.
